Ireland loses Keane for WCup qualifier vs. Germany

DUBLIN (AP) Ireland captain Robbie Keane has been ruled out of Friday's World Cup qualifier against Germany with an Achilles injury, robbing the team of another important player for the Group C match.

The Los Angeles Galaxy forward missed training on Thursday, although The Football Association of Ireland said on its Twitter feed that Keane could be fit for Tuesday's match away to the Faeroe Islands.

Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni, whose team beat Kazakhstan 2-1 in its only group match so far, has already lost Sean St. Ledger, Richard Dunne, Glen Whelan, James McClean and Kevin Doyle over the last two weeks.

Germany is top of the group after two straight wins.
