CLAIREFONTAINE, France (AP) France coach Didier Deschamps will start goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in Friday's friendly against Japan, giving him some valuable playing time ahead of next week's World Cup qualifier against Spain.
Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas signed Lloris from Lyon on transfer deadline day in August but has used 41-year-old Brad Friedel after the former United States international made a string of strong performances. Lloris made his Premier League debut against Aston Villa on Sunday, ending Friedel's run of 310 consecutive Premier League matches.
Deschamps would normally have given backup goalkeeper Steve Mandanda a game in a low-key friendly, but has decided against it.
"Lloris will play on Friday and he will be captain," Deschamps said Wednesday.
Deschamps has seen his midfield decimated by injury, with Abou Diaby, Alou Diarra, Rio Mavuba and Lassana Diarra all sidelined.
Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye sat out Tuesday's training because of abdominal pains and is unlikely to start against Japan.
Winger Franck Ribery, who has been in fine goal-scoring form with Bayern Munich after three goals in two games, was expected to resume full training on Wednesday evening after also sitting out Tuesday's closed-doors session.
"I don't want to take any risks," Deschamps said. "He could play a bit of the game (against Japan)."
