Since becoming Switzerland's first-choice goalkeeper the Euro 2008 tournament, Diego Benaglio's career has gone from strength to strength. The Zurich-born shot-stopper is a reassuring figure between the posts for both country and current club Wolsburg. At 6ft 4in Benaglio deals well with crosses and is a good organiser of his defence, After making his professional debut for Grasshoppers as a teenager, Benalgo had spells with German club Stuttgart and Portuguese side Nacional before joining Wolfsburg in 2008. He quickly established himself as No 1 with the Wolves and helped them win their first Bundesliga title in the 2008/2009 season when he made 31 appearances. The Bundesliga outfit showed their gratitude by handing Benaglio a new four-year contract which he signed in October 2009. He made his international debut in June 2006 against China and slipped comfortably into the jersey once worn by Pascal Zuberbühler. Benaglio underwent knee surgery on a niggling knee injury in February 2010 but is expected to recover in time for the 2010 World Cup finals. If he does make the squad for South Africa, Benaglio will be a key player for the Swiss.
