BioA vastly experienced defender, Jamie Carragher is not the quickest or the most skilful but he is a tactically astute and extremely effective presence and provides excellent cover at centre-back and right-back. It is in the latter position he is most likely to feature as the only bona-fide cover for Glen Johnson.Having grown through the ranks at Liverpool as a schoolboy, Carragher made his debut in 1996 aged 18 and a season later, in 1996/1997, he cemented his place as a regular and never looked back, notching up 600 first team appearances by December 2009 and winning numerous honours in the process including the FA Cup, UEFA Cup, Carling Cup and Champions League. Although in the last decade of his Liverpool career he has predominantly featured in the heart of defence, he was something of a defensive utility player in his early days, featuring as a full-back on either flank and also deployed as a defensive midfielder.Carragher made 34 appearances for England before he announced his international retirement in 2007 but England manager Fabio Capello managed to talk the 32-year old into a return to the fold for South Africa with Carragher himself citing Liverpool's failure to qualify for the Champions League as one of the reasons for his change of mind. If England make it through to the latter stages of the competition and Johnson is seen as too flighty against the better sides, Carragher could prove a crucial player in England's World Cup ambitions.
