BioA fearsome and versatile centre back who's talent is matched with controversy. William Gallas has developed into one of the Premier League's top defenders despite his petulance. Emerging from the youth scheme at Caen, Gallas moved to Marseille in 1997 and spent four years in the south of France. His strength, stamina and pace soon caught the eye of many top teams in Europe. Chelsea signed the highly rated defender in 2001 for around six million pounds. He was a key figure when Jose Mourinho led Chelsea to back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006. Despite this success Gallas was not happy, his versatility was his own downfall and he was constantly moved round the back four. This caused friction with his manager and he failed to attend the club's pre-season trip to America, Mourinho responded by giving his number 13 shirt to new signing Michael Ballack. The feud resulted in Gallas joining Arsenal in 2006 as a part exchange deal with Ashley Cole. His time at Arsenal has also produced controversy. He found himself in the spotlight following an embarrassing reaction to a draw against Birmingham in 2008, where he refused to leave the pitch. Gallas was stripped of the Arsenal captaincy following some ill-advised media comments. Despite this he has recently responded well and formed an industrious partnership with new arrival Thomas Vermaelen. Gallas is a key player for France and one of the most experienced individuals in Raymond Domenech's squad with more than 75 caps to his name. He made ten appearances during the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign. Player Stats
