One of Uruguay's most reliable players, Perez will make his World Cup debut in South Africa and is expected to be one of the team's leaders in the midfield. The defensive midfielder has enjoyed success with Uruguay since making his debut in 2001. He's helped La Celeste finish third at the 2004 Copa America before a fourth-place finish in 2007. However, he was left off the World Cup team in 2002, the last time Uruguay reached the quadrennial tournament. At that time in his career, he was a 21-year-old playing emerging for Uruguay's Defensor Sporting. His success there helped him earn a move to Penarol, one of the country's most storied teams. His stay at Penarol lasted just one season in 2003 before being purchased by AS Monaco of France's Ligue 1. Perez has battled to maintain his status as a regular for Monaco, but he helped the club finish as runners-up at the 2003-04 UEFA Champions League. Perez's work rate and attitude should help Uruguay in South Africa, but his experience could be the biggest key.
